Schools should be safe places where children go to learn, mature and grow into the young adults who will shape the future of our state and nation. Community events and dining venues should be places where people come together in good company. Unfortunately, as more rights have been bestowed to those wanting to own military style assault weapons than on innocent lives, we have seen these places become deadly war zones right in our backyards.
Gun violence is a public health epidemic. I support strong gun safety laws that require background checks before every gun sale, including those at gun shows and private sales, and limits on numbers of guns and the amount of ammunition purchased and on magazine size. I support a ban on the sale and ownership of military style assault weapons, and buyback programs to facilitate collection and destruction of these dangerous weapons which have no business on our streets. I support laws that deny gun ownership to violent offenders, including domestic violence, and concerted efforts by police to collect disallowed guns. California must continue to lead the way in addressing this alarming health crisis.
